The ovaries are part of the female reproductive system. They are located in the lower abdomen on both sides of the uterus. The ovaries have two main functions: Release an egg approximately every 28 days as part of the menstrual cycle. Release the hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Ovarian cysts are very common in women. In most cases, they cause no symptoms and go away on their own. Ovarian cysts are a sac or pouch filled with fluid or other tissue that develop on or inside the ovaries. Most cysts are benign but in extremely rare cases, they may be cancerous.
